Watch: Italy fails to qualify to the World Cup after goalless draw vs Sweden – player ratings and full match highlights

Italy have failed to secure a place to the World Cup, which will be held in Russia next summer.

The Azzurri have registered a goalless draw in the second leg against Sweden, after the first leg was won by the Scandinavian nation.

After suffering a shock loss 1-0 in the first leg, Giacomo Ventura’s men failed to score in their home soil on Tuesday night, despite they tried hard.

The scoreless draw meant Sweden won 1-0 on aggregate and consigned the Azzurri to watching the 2018 World Cup from afar.

Before the match the prospect of Italy missing out on football’s showpiece event was described as the “apocalypse”, and that apocalypse has now arrived.

This is the first time the Italians fails to qualify to a World Cup tournament since 1958.

Ventura decided to enter the match with a three-men defence, leaving in the bench players like Insigne, Eder and Bernardeschi, while he lined up Immobile and Gabbiadini.

These were some very contraversial choices, with the Italians failing to find the road to the net.

This news will disappoint nation legends like Gianluigi Buffon and Danielle De Rossi, who fought hard to take their country to the World Cup.

Here are the full player ratings.
