Lionel Messi won his fourth Ballon d’Or in 2013, and was hard to imagine for everyone at that time that his rival Cristiano Ronaldo would equal that record, let alone surpass it.
The former Manchester United man was scoring crazy amount of goals, but Barcelona were totally dominating under Pep Guardiola.
Four years forward, Cristiano Ronaldo has five Ballon d’Or awards, with Messi also in the same number.
The Portugese – remarkably – won it four times in the previous five years, after receiving it on Thursday night at the Eiffel Tower.
The 32-year-old had 946 points in the voting, while Messi came second with 670 points.
Neymar came third with 361.
Ronaldo was the heavy favorite to win the award after leading Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory.
On the other hand, Messi has scored and assisted more than his rival over the calendar year, with some fans believing that the Argentine should have won it.
And fans of the Argentine are retweeting a contraversial tweet from Gerard Pique made last November, to express their frustration at the outcome of the latest Ballon d’Or ceremony.
“If the Golden Ball [was for] the best player in the world, Leo would it have won every year since 2009,” Pique tweeted. “Another level.”
Over the last 24 hours, this tweet received a lot more retweets and likes. //Actuantes//
