Lionel Messi’s statement before facing Chelsea in 2006 has surfaced again on social media

We have witnessed some intersting Champions League ties after the draw was thrown on Monday afternoon.

La Liga giants Barcelona battle against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Plenty of reasons for a football fan to be excited, right?

The Blues and the Catalans will give their best to go through the last eight of the competition.

We have witnessed some memorable encounters between the duo in the last decade.

Who can forget their last 16 encounter in 2005, when John Terry’s late header at the Bridge secured a 5-4 aggregate win?

Or the semi-final contest in 2012, when Fernando Torres booked Chelsea’s place in the final with a late equaliser at the Camp Nou?

Almost every Chelsea fan has posted on social media today about the fact that Messi has never scored against the Blues in eight matches.

One thing that surfaced again was Messi’s quotes about Chelsea made in 2006.

Here’s what he said.

“There are players here who hate Chelsea more than Real Madrid,” Messi told the News of the World, per Sky Sports.

“I never thought I would hear myself say that.

“I also never thought I would see something worse than the Boca and River Plate rivalry or Brazil v Argentina – but this is.

“We would rather play Arsenal, Manchester United or anyone else than be on the pitch with Chelsea.”

This came a year after Barcelona’s acrimonius clash with Chelsea, who were under Jose Mourinho. //Actuantes//
