Italy coach. Luigi Di Biagio explains Mario Balotelli snub

Mario Balotelli has netted 22 goals for OGC Nice this season but was left out of the recent Italy squad, and Azzurri coach Luigi Di Biagio has explained why the striker was left out.

The 27-year-old has been a vital performer for the Ligue 1 side this season, scoring 22 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.

However, Balotelli was omitted from the squad, with with uncapped duo Patrick Cutrone and Federico Chiesa getting call-ups instead.

“Numbers and goals are important for forwards but they have to be linked to a certain type of performance,’ Di Biagio told reporters, according to the Daily Mirror.

“I have looked, judged and decided… I will continue to follow him and we will see what he does in the next few months.”
Italy will face England and Germany during the international break this week.
