Cristiano Ronaldo struck late in the second half to earn Real Madrid a point as they drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
Ronaldo returned to the line up after missing out over the weekend, while Gareth Bale had to settle for a spot on the bench.
Los Blancos got off to a poor start as Inaki Williams raced clear on goal before lobbing the ball over the on-rushing Keylor Navas to give Bilbao a shock lead, 0-1.
Marcelo almost equalised in the 25th minute for Zinedine Zidane’s charges with a fierce strike from outside the box but Athletic goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a firm save.
Raphael Verane also had a chance to get the reply for the hosts in the 33rd minute following a cross into the area by Toni Kroos but Kepa was on hand to make fine save once.
Nevertheless, Los Blancso went into the break trailing Athletic by 1-0.
Los Blancos struggled get going in the opening 10 minuets of the the second half as Athletic had things under control defensively.
Zidane’s troops were lucky not to have conceded the second goal in the 65th minute after Raul Garcia’s strike inside the box crashed against the crossbar.

Marcelo had another run-in with Kepa with a low strike from inside the box, but the Athletic shot-stopper smothered the strike.
However, Madrid got the equaliser three minutes before time as Ronaldo turned home Luka Modric’s low strike with an instinctive flick.
The hosts pressed for the winner in the closing minutes, but Bilbao managed to see out the closing stages to claim a point on the road.
