Where the likes of Real Madrid and Atleti have failed, Levante succeeded on Sunday night.
La Liga’s 15th-placed club finally proved that Barcelona are beatable with an extraordinary 5-4 victory as the Blaugrana fell at the penultimate hurdle of their quest to go the entire season unbeaten.
The obvious narrative was that the visitors missed Lionel Messi, though in reality the problems were more complex than that.
Philippe Coutinho did his best to inspire his team-mates with a hat-trick, but he ultimately wasn’t able to rally them in a way that only really the Argentine can.
Yerry Mina and Thomas Vermaelen were exploited at the back and Ernesto Valverde had even more of a headache when the latter was forced off with an injury.
Cue the entrance of Gerard Pique, which did seem to help Barca rediscover their bearings.
However, it was a frustrating night for the defender, who got himself involved in an altercation with the referee.
Take a look at the incident below, which all started with a foul by Mina.
According to AS, the official, Melero López, had to warn Pique, “careful now; don’t touch me” as the Spanish international grew increasingly irate.
Not one to let the matter drop, the former Manchester United man hit back:
“Don’t you threaten me. You’re the one threatening me, you’re the one threatening me.”
It was initially thought that Pique had been booked for dissent, though the referee’s post-match report explained that it was in fact Jordi Alba being shown the yellow.
