The Antoine Griezmann transfer saga has been going on for much of the year.
Atletico Madrid’s superstar was constantly linked with a summer switch to Barcelona even during the La Liga season, with Barca even having to issue a statement denying contact with the player back in January.
The statement read: “FC Barcelona strongly denies the information that has appeared over the course of the last few hours in different media regarding Atlético Madrid player, Antoine Griezmann, and an alleged deal with our club.
“FC Barcelona expresses its objections in the face of these events and reiterates its full respect for the institution of Atlético Madrid.”
However, the links have persisted ever since, with reports from Spain in the last few months suggesting that Griezmann’s switch to Catalonia was merely a formality.
The French international was jeered by Atleti fans during their final game of the season v Eibar, which had many thinking he was certainly off.
But, it seemed they were wrong, with AS reporting that the 27-year-old will remain with Atleti and sign a new improved contract with the club.
A supposedly decisive factor in negotiations was Diego Simeone’s promise to bring in some star names this summer to keep the club competitive, with Thomas Lemar and Angel Di Maria two names being linked with the club.
All sorted, right? Well, no, not at all, because Griezmann’s entourage over in France has now reacted to the rumours.
Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “As of today, we do not know where Antoine will be playing next season. Antoine has still not decided what his new club is. And contrary to everything that has been said in recent months, he has not signed any pre-contract with Barcelona.”
This is just getting silly now. Griezmann apparently wants his future sorted before the start of the World Cup and time is ticking.
