Argentina’s preparations for the 2018 World Cup haven’t gone smoothly.
Sergio Romero was ruled out of the tournament last month after suffering a knee injury.
La Albiceleste then cancelled a friendly match against Israel in Jerusalem, scheduled for Saturday, after threats were made to Lionel Messi.
It means Jorge Sampaoli has just a 4-0 victory over Haiti on May 30 in which to assess his players ahead of the tournament in Russia.
More bad news was to come with Argentina confirming that midfielder Manuel Lanzini will miss the tournament.
The West Ham player ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a training session on Friday morning.
“Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today’s morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee,” a statement posted on the Argentinian Football Association’s Twitter account said.
Lanzini had worked his way into Sampaoli’s side after scoring five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season.
The 25-year-old also scored in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Italy in March.
Footage of Messi and his Argentina teammates reacting to the news has emerged and it’s clear just how much of an impact it has had on the squad.
Messi looks crestfallen while his teammates are visibly upset.
