The Best South American XI At The 2018 FIFA World Cup

Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Brazil’s Neymar are expected to set the 2018 FIFA World Cup alight, but which other stars would make a South American dream team? Here is our Best South American XI, which includes some of the world’s biggest names.

Brazil are among the favourites to win the tournament, and have lost only one of their past 21 games. They have also only conceded five goals throughout that run and, as a consequence, three Brazilians made it into the back five of our South American XI.

Alisson has been selected in goal after a string of fine performances for the Selecao and AS Roma in 2017/18, which have Europe biggest clubs chasing the 25-year-old. He is joined by his countryman Thiago Silva at centre-back and Marcelo at left-back.

The right-back position would have been in Brazilian hands as well were it not for Dani Alves’ injury in the build-up to the tournament.

Since it is not 100% given that Manchester City’s Danilo will start for the Selecao throughout the World Cup, we opted for Colombia’s Santiago Arias.

The PSV right-back convinced in the Eredivisie in 2017/18, and has been tipped to make a big move after the World Cup. Uruguay’s Diego Godin joins the defensive line after his rock-solid performances for Atletico Madrid and his country.

In midfield, we opted for Argentina’s Javier Mascherano, as well as Brazil’s Philippe Coutinho, who is expected to start in a more central role rather than on the wings for the Selecao in Russia.

Colombia’s James Rodriguez starts as an attacking midfielder after his fine performances for Bayern Munich, while many still remember his exploits in the 2014 tournament, for which he won the Golden Boot.

Up front, Lionel Messi and Neymar, who have scored 119 international goals between them, fill the wing positions, while Uruguay’s all-time record scorer Luis Suarez leads the line.

There is a lot of firepower in this South American Dream Team, and we hope these players can contribute to an exciting tournament in Russia.
