Real Madrid confirmed the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Tuesday, but what moves will they now make in the transfer window? Here are five stars Los Blancos could look at to replace the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
On Tuesday, Ronaldo completed a €105 million (R1.65 billion) transfer from Real to the Bianconeri following a reported fallout with the Spanish club’s board.
Many publications, including the Daily Express, have suggested that Belgium winger Eden Hazard is one of the players being lined up to replace the Portuguese striker at the Santiago Bernabeu, although Chelsea will be desperate for the winger to stay.
Hazard recently revealed he has had no official offers from any club in this transfer window, but following Ronaldo’s exit from Real, his agent might be fielding some calls.
Tottenham Hotspur and England forward Harry Kane could also be among the candidates, as could Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish attacker is said to be open to a move away from the Bundesliga, with Los Blancos reportedly in his sights.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe has also been spoken about as a possible target, although it seems unrealistic to imagine the French giants selling the former Monaco man in the same window he becomes their permanent player, having spent his first season at PSG on loan.
Mbappe has impressed with his performances for France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, scoring three goals in six matches, including a round of 16 brace against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Lastly, Neymar is believed to be Real’s ideal signing, but his situation is similar to that of Mbappe’s. The Brazilian became the world’s most expensive player when he joined PSG from Barcelona at the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign, and not many feel he will leave France after just one season.
Replacing Ronaldo’s goals at Los Blancos will be an almost impossible task, and with Karim Benzema not at the top of his game and Gareth Bale’s future at the club uncertain, the Spanish giants are expected to have a busy transfer window.
