FC Barcelona Star: I Was Surprised By 2018 FIFA World Cup Snub

A Spain and FC Barcelona star has revealed that he was taken aback when he found out he had been snubbed for his national team’s 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.

New Real Madrid signing Alvaro Odriozola was preferred to Sergi Roberto for Spain’s World Cup side two months ago, a decision that shocked many despite the Barca player having played just three times for La Furia Roja before.

Roberto has now revealed he was surprised to be left out of former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui’s plans for the tournament, but hopes Luis Enrique’s appointment will see him being selected for national duty again.

“Honestly, I thought I was going to get called up,” he said, according to ESPN.

“I wasn’t, so that gave me a good chance to have a longer holiday – I was able to watch (the World Cup) on television.

“I have always said that Luis Enrique has been very important in my career, both with Barca B and the first team.

“It’s true he’s now the Spain coach but I am just focused on giving my best and, if in the end I get the call from Luis, I’ll be really happy, but that depends on how I play for Barca.”

Roberto last represented his nation in 2016, but has plenty of experience at club level, with 200 senior appearances for Barca to his name.
