Real Madrid’s recent poor record at San Mames continued after they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Saturday evening.
Los Blancos had failed to secure victory in their last three visits to San Mames, but they were the better side from the onset despite not creating clear-cut chances.
Despite’s real dominance, Bilbao were certainly a threat on the counter with the pace of Inaki Williams and Iker Munian, who looked threatening in the opening 20 minutes.
So it was no surprise when Williams and Munian combined to get the opening goal, with the latter poking home from close range after 32 minutes.
Los Blancos pushed for an equaliser in the remaining stages of the first half, but the likes of Benzema and Bale cut frustrated figures as they failed to impose themselves in the game.
After a poor start to the second half, Isco replaced Luka Modric on the hour mark and the impact was instant.
Los Blancos were level in the 63rd minute as Toni Kroos and Bale combined to set up Isco, who made no mistake from close range, 1-1.
With 14 minutes remaining, Julen Lopetegui decided to withdraw Bale for Lucas Vazquez as they went in search of a winning goal.
Los Blancos threw everything forward in search of a winning goal, but Bilbao hung on to claim an impressive point against the European champions.
