Ronaldo does not see Messi among Ballon d’Or favourites

Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken about the upcoming Ballon d’Or award. The Portuguese has won the award five times, the same amount as Lionel Messi, who he doesn’t see among this year’s favourites.

However, in an interview with France Football, Ronaldo did highlight that only he and Messi have managed something which is difficult to repeat: staying at the top for a decade.

The former Real Madrid player said that despite turning 34 this season he’s still among the best in the world and that he deserves the Ballon d’Or. In this sense, he says the favourites will be “the same as always,” although it’s possible that Messi will not be on the podium.

Among the candidates for the prize, Ronaldo cited Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane and Mbappe although he feels it will be tough for any of them to be at the top for as long as him and Messi.

“How many players are capable of being at the top of the game for 10 years? You can count them on one hand. Well, there are only two: Messi and me.”

Ronaldo feels there are people that don’t want him to be among the best in the world, but warned that the end of his career is a long way away still.

“There are people that would like it to be the end of an era. But that’s not the case. I am and I will continue here. And I deserve it. My results speak for me,” he said.

He added: “Age is in the head and that allowed me to keep going, to feel the same pleasure doing what I do on the pitch, being happy. I know it will end one day, but in four, five, six years.”
