Footballers do not come much more divisive than Memphis Depay.
One week the Dutchman looks like a world beater, the next he’s sulking on the bench and being nothing but a hindrance to the team.
At Manchester United, things did not work out for him but he appeared to have found some degree of consistency at Lyon.
However, in recent weeks his past tendencies have started creeping back into his game.
Depay was benched for Lyon’s 2-1 win over Angers on the weekend, something which the Dutchman didn’t react to well too – he actually came on and scored the winner.
“I am fed up of hearing that each time I changed the game,” he said. “I do not always feel like I am a player who is respected. I do the job each time, I am mentally strong.
“I have to accept the decisions of the coach. I am a bit disappointed, I think I deserve more respect. I deserve more than this and I should be playing each match.”
Not the kind of thing you want your players saying to the media.
And it appears Lyon boss Bruno Genesio was far from pleased with Depay, because he gave him a very public dressing down in front of the entire squad.

According to French publication RMC, Genesio said: “I want to apologize to Memphis. I apologize for any time you were late for the training, and I apologize for you wearing shoes from the sponsor instead of the club, knowing that it is forbidden.”
“I apologize for your inadequate warm-up in Angers, that you were too late and your lack of commitment. Memphis, to have a good career, you will have to be humble.”
Well, that’s one way to make your point clear to a player.
